What types of hydroponic systems are out there?

There are several types of hydroponic systems, each with its own unique characteristics and advantages. This post provides a quick overview of the most common types:

  1. Deep Water Culture (DWC): Plants are suspended in a nutrient solution that is aerated by an air pump. Also known as a “Bubble bucket” this system is probably one of the simplest systems to implement.
  2. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT): A thin film of nutrient solution flows over the roots of the plants, which are held in a channel.
  3. Drip System: A slow drip of nutrient solution is delivered to the roots of the plants through a network of tubes.
  4. Aeroponics: Plants are suspended in air, and the roots are misted with a nutrient solution.
  5. Ebb and Flow: Plants are periodically flooded with a nutrient solution, which then drains away.
  6. Wick System: A wick draws nutrient solution from a reservoir to the roots of the plants.
  7. Vertical System: Plants are grown in vertical towers, with nutrient solution delivered to the roots from the top.

Each system has its own benefits and drawbacks, and the choice of system will depend on factors such as the type of plant being grown, the available space, and the level of automation desired.

In my opinion the best system for beginners is the DWC/ Bubble bucket systems since it is the simplest to set up and is generally very fool proof. With DWC there is only a bucket and an air pump. There are no water pumps or timers to fail, and in the event of a power outage (or a cord getting accidentally pulled out) the roots remain submerged and can survive for a while.
