Building a Propagator Tub

April 7, 2023

The purpose of a propagator tub is simple: To host many small plants without taking up the same space as mature plants. The propagator I’m building today host 35 plants. I expect it should be perfect for about the month and a half needed before the plants move outdoors into their big planters.

I use the flat 7 gallon tubs that are made to store things under a bed or in a closet. Most of the roots hang straight down so things don’t get too tangled and transplanting is as simple as pulling the pots out of the tub.

The whole build is pretty much done with a 2″ hole saw and a power drill. I use a drill press because I have one but of course you can use a hand drill too. Lay out a grid that works with your container and make the holes. I have a deburring tool that I use to clean up the edges of the holes but hitting them quickly with sandpaper works too.
