Happy plants after nutrient switch

June 23, 2023

I start my plants using a simple dry nutrient mix from General Hydroponics called Maxi-Grow. The mix is high in nitrogen so it really rocks in the growth stage of plants.

After a few weeks outdoors when the plants are a couple feet tall I switch over to another product from general hydroponics called Maxi-Bloom which is higher in phosphorus which is what the plats want when they are producing fruit.

It’s as simple as out with the old, in with the new. I’m running a little hotter than 1 tsp per gallon right now and the plants seem very happy.

The pictures below were taken mid june a few days after the nutrient changeover. There are tons of flowers but almost no fruit just yet.

Three planters consisting of 2 10 gallon tubs in the center with 2 additional 5 gallon buckets all running off of a single air pump.
A couple of tomato plants in one bucket and a young cuke. This picture shows the challenge of crowding of the airspace above the buckets. I have used the fence to trellis some of the tomatoes to free up space above the bucket
A pepper and tomato plant sharing a 5 gallon bucket. I’ll likely plug the vacant spot with a cucumber plant or something else that grows low and viny
Another group of happy tomato plants sharing a bucket with a couple of small cukes. The lack of grass on the law shows how dry it has been this summer. The dryness is not impacting the hydroponic plants at all.
